Attempt To Expand Gun Rights Unsuccessful

On Wednesday, the Senate turned down a provision in a law hoping to expand gun rights in America. If passed, the law would allow gun owners with concealed weapon permits to carry their concealed firearms from one state into another.

The provision escaped effect when it received 60 votes against it, and a close 58 votes for. Mayor Mike Bloomberg of New York has been a staunch advocate for gun control during his time in office and told the press, “The vast majority of states have set minimum requirements for obtaining a permit to carry a concealed gun, and Congress should respect those laws.” Bloomberg also heads Mayors Against Illegal Guns, with boats over 400 mayors.

While many feel the federal government should not be allowed a say in state legislature and regulation, if the provision went into to effect not only would guns be allowed in bars, but permits would allow concealed weapons to be carried across state lines.
